PG/L ORGANIZATION
MEMBERSHIP
PGL welcomes and encourages anyone to support its work. It has no formal membership criteria, although many individuals send in an annual membership contribution in the fall, and those who are most active attend the monthly meetings in order to keep informed about the program, help make program decisions, and become educated about Nicaragua. PGL maintains a mailing list of friends throughout the United States who receive the regular newsletter, and anyone interested in the newsletter can "contact us" at the address given in this website.
To subscribe to the PGL listserve for announcements regarding future meetings and events or to receive our monthly newsletter, please send a blank email to PGL_list-subscribe@yahoogroups.com
ORGANIZATION
The supporting organization in Gettysburg meets on the first Sunday of each month from September through June in the homes of its members in order to carry out its business and hold educational programs.
The budget of $50,000 is raised through pledges, donations, and several annual fund raisers. In León the programs and projects are managed by an on site coordinator.
POLICIES
PG/L is committed to carrying out community development projects that, to as great an extent as possible, can gradually be taken over and sustained by the local people themselves. While some situations do justify material aid or one time contributions, PG/L emphasizes projects that have the promise of longevity and long-term impact. Consequently, PG/L operates on the advice of, and with active participation of, the local people in choosing projects and carrying them out. As a result, directivas, or local advisory councils, play a critical role in helping direct the work of PG/L.

EDUCATION
In Gettysburg the most powerful education comes to those who participate in the group visits to León (usually at their own expense), as well as to those who host visitors from León. But PG/L also holds educational programs and uses opportunities, such as when material aid is solicited from the community, to inform the public of realities in León. One aim of this education is to build interest in, and commitment to, the purpose of PG/L so that individuals are willing to support the projects financially and with their time and effort.
