Delegations

Every year PGL sponsors delegations that travel to Nicaragua to experience the people, the history, the land and our programs. Through the office in León, PGL arranges the schedule and content of the Nicaragua visit, which typically runs 7-to-10 days.  Each year, in January and March, two student groups from Gettysburg College participate in delegations to Nicaragua, as do qualifying Heston Summer Experience students, and the College also sponsors delegations for interested community members.

Delegations learn about Nicaragua’s history, including its civil war and relationship with the U.S., and they visit a variety of PGL project sites, such as a traditional arts school, a solar oven clinic, a school or community educational program, or a rural coffee cooperative.  There are cultural events and good food, as well as time for sightseeing, going to the beach, shopping, and just relaxing .  Often delegation members participate in local home stays, experiencing the warmth and hospitality of Nicaraguan families, which is usually the highlight of their visit.

Delegations serve an important educational function, and participants often report that their visit is a formative experience in their lives. For more information on delegations, Contact Us.
