A special fund-raising campaign was initiated in November in order to raise the $20,000 PGL has committed for the construction of a preschool in the community of Monte Horet. Already by early December approximately $7,000 had been contributed in cash and pledges. When contributions reach the half-way mark of $10,000 PGL's in-country coordinator, Greg Bowles, will inform the residents of Monte Horet that they can begin construction.
The building, the first community facility for Monte Horet, will serve primarily as a preschool, but will also function as a space for community gatherings and as the location for health care by visiting medical personnel. The Nicaraguan government has agreed to provide the preschool teacher, and an NGO with which PGL has networked will finance the daily meal for the children.
PGL will, through its funding, provide the construction materials for the building, while the local residents will do the labor. They already saw to it that architectural plans for the building were drawn up, and are ready to order the construction materials. PGL is acquainted with the village, having worked with it on the project in 2010 to bring electricity to the residents.
Monte Horet, a community of approximately 80 families, is in the District of León.
