This project holds two-week workshops that train primarily poor, rural women to build and use their own solar oven. Become a Sponsor of this program and help empower rural woman by teaching them how to construct their own solar ovens. These ovens provide tremendous benefits: they are in harmony with nature because they do not require cutting down trees for fuel; they are good for one's health because they produce no smoke; they reduce the labor involved in cooking because one does not have to gather fuel, stoke the oven, and dump the ashes; they are highly friendly to the environment because they produce no waste ashes; and they lower the expense of preparing food, since one uses free, solar energy. The trainings serve as encounter groups for the women to share and address personal and community concerns, such as nutrition and child-raising. These workshops explore the use of solar ovens, solar dryers, and solar methods of water purification to produce dried fruits and teas that can be sold at local markets. Through these sales, this project hopes to become self-sustaining. The workshops are ongoing and are held in various communities surrounding Leon. |
